Chartered in 1760, Tarboro served the area as an important Colonial river port and thriving trade center until the Civil War. The center of Tarboro is the beautifully sculpted Town Common and Historic District. One of only two original town commons left in the United States, this 15-acre greenery is lined with tall oak trees and war memorials. The 45-block Historic District is a must for historic preservationists, history enthusiasts, and architectural designers. Created by the National Parks Service in 1977, the Historic District boasts more than 300 structures from residential dwellings to churches and cemeteries to original 19
