With a population surpassing 55,000, the City of Rocky Mount is only partially located in Edgecombe County as railroad tracks divide the city between Nash and Edgecombe Counties. Rocky Mount had its beginning in the early part of the 19^th century and its name was derived from the rocky mound at the falls of the Tar River. This was also the site of Rocky Mount Mills, one of the first cotton mills in North Carolina which was established in 1818. Though the mill closed its doors in 1996, Rocky Mount is bustling many businesses, attractions, restaurants, and accommodations. Families will delight in trips to the Imperial Centre for Arts and Sciences, Children’s Museum and Science Center, Cummins Planetarium, and the Rocky Mount Sports Complex. Edgecombe Community College’s Rocky Mount Campus, Nash Community College and North Carolina Wesleyan College are all accredited academic institutions with programs tailored for every student.
